Prawn curry recipe is one of the famous curry dish in south Asia. Different countries has their own way of making prawn curry, in this post I am going to show you how in Sri Lankan (some part of Sri Lanka) cook their prawn curry.

In Sri lanka, they use coconut milk and oil with all most any curry they make. By using coconut milk will take the curry into a different level. You can by coconut milk from any major supermarket now a days.

Choosing the right prawns for the prawn curry.

Choose the fresh prawns with the shell on. Make sure prawns are not discolored or have any fishy smell. Avoid ready made packed prawns unless they are frozen. If you are buying from a market be sure, they are kept on the ice. If you can touch them, make sure they are firm, with the shell on.

How to prepare the prawns?

Devein them by removing the head, legs and tail first. I like to keep the tail (it’s my personal choice). The prawn looks good with the tail. Transfer the prawns to a bowl and wash them with cold water, rinsing and drain. Repeat few times. If you are using frozen prawns, do not defrost in a microwave. Defrost them for about 30 minutes at room temperature before using.

How to cook prawn curry step by step guide.

  1. Marinating the prawns: Get a large bowl and add the prawns, black pepper, turmeric powder and pinch of salt. Mix them together and set aside.

2. Set the pan on a medium heat

3. Add coconut oil to the pan and fry the prawns both side until they cooked. I like to use coconut oil, if you can’t find coconut oil, you can use any cooking oil. Fry about 3 minutes each side.

4. Empty the prawns from the pan and add more coconut oil to the same pan. add garlic, ginger and onion and stir for about 1 minute. Then add some fresh curry leaves and green chili, while you stir add some cumin and mustard seeds some chopped tomatoes.

5. About 1/2 minutes of stir add some chili powder, turmeric powder and cumin powder and mix well until they cooked. Add Anaheim and Fresno if you like your dish to be hot and flavorful. cook for about 10 minutes.

6. Add the coconut milk and cooked potato and mix gently. and cook for 1 minute. And add finely Ground the Cinnamon, cardamom and clove and add the curry and gently mix. Your prawn curry is ready.

What should I have with this amazing prawns curry?

You can serve with plain rice or rotti, Naan or chapati. Jeera rice is a very good combination with this prawn curry.

Ingredients

For marinating the Prawns

  • 300 g Prawns
  • ¼ tsp Black Pepper
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ¼ tsp Salt

Other Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 5 – 6 clove Garlic chopped
  • 1 tbsp Ginger chopped
  • 1 large Onion cut rings
  • 8 – 10 Curry Leaves fresh
  • 2 – 3 large Green Chili
  • ¼ tsp Cumin seeds
  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 large Tomato chopped
  • ½ tsp Chili Powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ tsp Cumin Powder
  • 1 large Anaheim optional
  • 1 large Fresno optional
  • ½ Lemon juice
  • ½ cup Coconut Milk
  • 1 large Potato cooked (optional)
  • 1 medium Cinnamon stick
  • 2 – 3 Cardamom
  • 2 – 3 Clove

Instructions

  • Add Prawns, Black Pepper, Salt and Turmeric Powder to a bowl and mix them together and set aside.
  • Set the pan on a medium heat.
  • Add coconut oil to the pan and fry the prawns both side until they cooked.(5-7 MIN)
  • Empty the prawns from the pan and add more coconut oil to the same pan. add garlic, ginger and onion and stir for about 1 minute. Then add some fresh curry leaves and green chili, while you stir add some cumin and mustard seeds some chopped tomatoes.
  • About 1/2 minutes of stir add some chili powder, turmeric powder and cumin powder and mix well until they cooked.
  • Add Anaheim and Fresno if you like your dish to be hot and flavorful. cook for about 10 minutes
  • Now add the prawns and lemon juice to the gravy and mix gently.
  • Add the coconut milk and cooked potato and mix gently.
  • Finally Ground the Cinnamon, cardamom and clove and add the curry and gently mix.
